The Story of Parkway Garden Centre
Parkway Garden Centre stands as a testament to horticultural passion, family dedication, and immigrant entrepreneurship in London, Ontario. Its story begins with Peter Jacobsen, a man whose journey from a small German village to creating one of Southern Ontario's beloved garden destinations embodies the Canadian dream.

Humble Beginnings
Born in 1933 in Holt, Germany, Peter Jacobsen developed an early affinity for horticulture, completing his Journeyman's qualifications before seeking greater opportunities in Canada. Arriving in 1954 with minimal English but abundant determination, Peter worked multiple jobs from road construction to manufacturing while pursuing his passion on evenings and weekends—loading his VW Beetle with plants and garden tools to provide maintenance services.
After meeting and marrying Carina in 1959, Peter's tireless work ethic allowed him to purchase a 25-acre farm west of Hyde Park where he built the family home. By the early 1970s, his dream began taking root as he constructed his first greenhouse and started growing plants to sell to local garden centres.

Growth and Development
One of Parkway's earliest and most charming offerings was Peter's carefully cultivated pansy beds, sold as "Dig your own, $1 a dozen." His enthusiasm for discovering and developing new plants even led him to patent his own strain of geraniums. The business flourished under his green thumb and entrepreneurial spirit.
Peter's presence in the greenhouse became legendary among staff and customers alike. Many remember him sharing gardening tips, telling stories, or offering fresh figs grown in the greenhouse. Always accompanied by his dogs through the grounds, his charm and genuine passion for plants created lasting impressions.

In 1989, Peter Jacobsen patented two geranium plant varieties.

A Family Legacy
In 2000, Peter and Carina's son Erik and his wife Birgit officially took over the business, continuing the family tradition. Erik, who had worked at Parkway since childhood—starting with planting pansies before moving on to constructing greenhouses and expanding the property—now oversees operations and plans for continued growth. Birgit manages the financial aspects of the business.

Parkway Garden Centre Today
Since its founding in 1969, Parkway Garden Centre has evolved into a year-round destination for garden enthusiasts across Southern Ontario. The centre now features a 30,000 square foot indoor shopping space, allowing customers to explore regardless of weather conditions.
The offerings have expanded far beyond those first pansy beds to include an extensive selection of:
- Perennials and annuals
- Trees and shrubs
- Tropical houseplants
- Succulents and herbs
- Pottery and giftware
The centre also provides specialized services such as free patio pot planting weekends in May and year-round tropical plant potting services. Their landscape department helps customers bring their garden dreams to life.

Values & Community Connection
For over five decades, Parkway Garden Centre has maintained its commitment to providing premium quality merchandise to London and surrounding communities. The knowledgeable staff, many with years of horticultural experience, continue Peter's tradition of sharing expertise and enthusiasm with everyone who visits.
As Erik and Birgit occasionally walk their dogs Mabel and Sara around the property, they carry forward the legacy of a business built on a genuine love for plants, exceptional service, and family values.
What began as a German immigrant's dream has blossomed into a beloved garden destination that continues to inspire and serve gardeners throughout Southern Ontario.
